Aerospace and Defense
Customer Application:
Our customer, who is a major defense contractor, needed a rugged simulation system for a high speed data acquisition project in support of a large Defense contract. The application involved the streaming of data to DMA memory at over 2.4MB per second without impacting the video output performance. The contract mandated that the system be configured of leading edge commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components to support the life of the 3 year program. Due to the harsh environments where the systems will be deployed, each system needed to withstand high shock and vibration specifications in order to survive transport to each location.
Core Solution:
Core Systems designed a solution that exceeded the customer’s specification using leading-edge COTS components which provided a fast yet extremely stable platform. The 4U integrated system was based on our RAPTOR-4341 configuration. Based on the latest chipsets, we integrated a long life ATX motherboard and dual core CPU to allow us to support this configuration for 2 years past their specified 3 years of program support. In order to satisfy the rigorous shock and vibration specifications we utilized a bulk head card hold bar to support each feature card in their respective slots then shock isolated the hard drive cage to protect against severe vibration. Each short depth 4U system was controlled via one of our 19” clamshell LCD’s which were mounted into their custom designed transport cases.
Science and Medical
Customer Application:
Our customer operates an underwater Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) in depths of 8,000 to over 16,000 feet. The main goal is scientific exploration of the oceans using the ROVs’ sonar processor, real-time video overlay system, vehicle health monitoring systems and navigation system.
Core Solution:
Core systems developed a solution for the entire ROV data control rack. Due to the unique setup of the control rack we provided a combination of 1U and 2U Dual Core CPU systems for rack space optimization and overall system multi-task speed. Multiple 1U rack mount displays, keyboards and KVM’s were mounted in the console allowing multiple operators to conduct simultaneous task during the same underwater mission.
Industrial Automation
Customer Application:
Our customer is the premier manufacturer and innovator of sport optics and clothing. Their name is synonymous with sport and they have managed to elevate their designs to the level of art. The application was a high powered industrial computer to run their Stereolithographic computer modeling. They wanted to use the computer modeling combined with CAD/CAM liquid laser prototyping to create fully detailed, wearable prototypes of eyewear and footwear. The Rapid iteration of working models would allow for extensive testing and perfecting of product design before introduction to the public. The only catch was that their software was written for a specific operating system and chipset so platform stability and configuration revision control was deemed paramount.
Core Solution:
Core Systems developed a 4U solution to run their computer modeling composed of Long Life revision controlled system components that are supported for a period of 3-5 years. The front mounted dual 120mm fans provided for superior cooling within the system while the internal RAID card maintained data redundancy of the internal hard drives. The customer could rest assured that the software used to run their computer modeling would be supported by our platform for several years into the future.
Test, Measurement and Data Recording
Customer Application:
Our customer designs, develops and manufactures systems and components for aircraft, space, and defense applications. This particular application involved the data acquisition testing and simulation of turbine jet engines. The environment is a control rack mounted outside of the testing room which is subject to constant vibration, airborne fine oils and gas residue.
Core Solution:
Core Systems developed a 4U dual core CPU system with a shock isolated hard drive cage to protect against constant vibration. Each card is clamped into the system via a bulkhead support bar. The front door of the system is equipped with a replaceable micron filter to allow for the filtration of the fine oils and gas residue inherent in this testing environment.
Digital Video and Security
Customer Application:
Our customer provides CCTV system control and digital recording products for security surveillance applications to protect people, property and stock, and for process control monitoring. This particular application involved the digital video surveillance system of a major gaming company.
Core Solution:
Core Systems developed a 2U DVR system coupled with a mini desktop review station to replace the bulky and cumbersome VHS tape based surveillance systems. Hard drive recording and seek time were essential in this application so 10,000K RPM 16MB cache SATA drives were utilized in the 2U system with dual redundant power supplies to maximize system uptime and provide fault tollerance. The review station node utilized the high speed SATA drives as well, but unlike the DVR needed the rapid multitasking ability of a Core 2 Duo CPU instead of a standard Pentium 4.
Telephony and Communications
Customer Application:
Our customer provides automated Intelligent Notification (IN') solutions for global and enterprise-wide communications and business continuity. This particular application involves the monitoring of a Network Operations Center (NOC) where five minutes of downtime of a mission-critical application can delay thousands of transactions, with serious losses, both in revenue, public image and customer satisfaction. Their mission is to provide a notification system that immediately alerts appropriate personnel of the issue and automatically escalates it if a response from the resources is not received.
Core Solution:
Core Systems developed a 14 slot SBC based Core 2 Duo mission critical system. Since the customer needed to add 12 of their proprietary DSP communications cards to the system we first conducted a power rating on the configuration. Upon calculating the appropriate power draw of the system we integrated a customized dual redundant 600W power supply and a bank of center mounted high CFM fans to both power and cool the system. The 6 hot swap U320 SCSI drives were configured to RAID 10 for high I/O speed and redundancy.
Broadcast and Multimedia
Customer Application:
Our customer captures and licenses major live broadcast events , streaming them over the internet via live satellite broadcast to an exclusive network of licensed media entertainment outlets nationwide. The content is therefore live in-demand, on-demand to every major city broadcast in High Definition.
Core Solution:
Core Systems developed a compact system (3U) to broadcast High Definition images and events to multiple locations. The deployments of these systems would not be under the direct control of our customer so each system needed to be intuitive and fault tolerant. The transport case for the systems were relatively compact in size so we used these size constraints to design a 3U chassis with a 6.4” touch screen monitor integrated into the front bezel of the chassis. Streaming the multi-media content quickly was facilitated by a Core 2 Duo CPU, a high powered dual display video card and a studio quality audio card. The terabyte of SATA 300 storage was configured to RAID 10 for high I/O speed and redundancy. We added an encryption card to the system to protect the customer from piracy at each install location.
